Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today held a working meeting with – and hosted a lunch for – Slovak Prime Minister Dr. Robert Fico. Prime Minister Olmert briefed his Slovak counterpart on the achievements of the Israeli economy. The two leaders agreed to expand bilateral economic cooperation, especially in research and development and in boosting trade. Prime Minister Olmert briefed Slovak Prime Minister Fico on the possible implications of the Palestinian unity government and reiterated Israel’s position that it was impossible to hold contacts with it or with its ministers. Prime Minister Olmert agreed with his Slovak counterpart that Slovakia, which is currently a member of the UN Security Council, would support the imposition of sanctions on Iran in order to prevent it from equipping itself with nuclear weapons. The two leaders also discussed the need to fight weapons smuggling from Iran and Syria to within Lebanon.
